We enjoyed three fabulous open community garden events last week: the Horticultural Therapy Trust; Plymouth Permaculture Allotment; and Stonehall Flats Community Garden and Orchard. The Horticultural Therapy Trust was impressive with significant food growing and a solar cooker, which was working well in the sunshine! It was wonderful to revisit the Permaculture plot at Swarthmore Allotments and see the apple and pear trees we planted some 15 years ago fruiting so well. Stonehall Flats Community Garden and Orchard was looking lovely.
It was a great way in which to say farewell to Lily Urbanska who is going on maternity leave and to welcome Tif Dickinson who will now be facilitating Grow Stonehouse.
Looking ahead, two extra community gardens are opening their gates to visitors this month. Please see the poster below for full details. All of the community gardens on show are different and distinctive, illustrating the many and varied aspects of community gardening and celebrating the people who love them. One of the latest community gardens to join us is perhaps one of the smallest in the city. It isCattedown Community Waste Ground Garden , where residents have transformed an area of waste ground into a colourful and vibrant growing space. As part of this, local residents have been providing kitchen waste to make compost to help improve the soil.
