Sustainable Food Cities – “Work on trade & food continues and we need your help”
Please see below an email from Vera Zakharov, Local Action Coordinator from Sustainable Food Places
Hello all,
I hope you will be pleased that Sustain is continuing to work on ensuring that UK trade talks with the US (which start today!) and ensuing trade deal does not shortchange the brilliant progress and improved standards made by the SFP network and others. It seems they are hoping to do this under the radar and away from public scrutiny.
It would be invaluable to have your action and support on this.
This week: please share the below via your local networks via emails, newsletters and social media.
In the coming week: We’ll share template letters to send to your MPs, with ideas for highlighting potential impacts on your local food systems and work around healthy diets, animal welfare and climate impact of food, and a call for them to raise these issues on behalf of their constituents. Watch this space!
Newsletter/email text:
Please join our friends Sustain and Friends of the Earth in calling on the Government to halt trade talks with the US until such time that the situation regarding Covid-19 is clearer and negotiations can receive the scrutiny and attention they deserve from organisations, businesses, MPs and the general public.

More on why a sub-standard trade deal with the United States could threaten our food, agriculture, animal welfare and environmental standards, and undercut businesses delivering good food:

Please join [our organisation], @friends_earth & @UKSustain and over 50,000 signatories in calling for @trussliz to pause the UK-US trade talks until we are through the Covid-19 crisis and the talks can receive the public scrutiny they deserve. https://lagoon.friendsoftheearth.uk/climate-change/open-letter-liz-truss-trade-deal-us
Many thanks,
