Building on our long-standing work with our local, regional and national partners around reducing the eco-footprint of the food system, Food Plymouth core team members are busily engaging with responses to the Climate Emergency. As a Social Enterprise City, Plymouth is working on how the social enterprise and social economy sector can declare a Climate Emergency and take specific meaningful actions in response. In this vein, earlier this week, Food Plymouth’s Ian Smith contributed to a Plymouth Social Enterprise Network (PSEN) strategy session. This included work on PSEN’s forthcoming Climate Emergency declaration and the necessary information and support package for PSEN members and others which will underpin this initiative. Look out for more on this topic in PSEN’s weekly e-newsletter and social media channels and in future editions of this e-bulletin. Food Plymouth core team members have also been engaging in discussions around being part of major local initiatives involving cross-sector working and social enterprise solutions to presenting economic and environmental challenges. We will keep you posted of developments in these fields as they unfold. At a practical level, Food Plymouth is looking forward to hosting a visit from the South Devon Bioregional Learning Centre on September 10th. This is part of an extended learning tour by the Centre. The Bioregional team are particularly interested in short local supply chain – including urban growing – and preventing / managing food waste. Look out for further information on the visit in the next edition of this e-bulletin. We are also engaging in some interesting and relevant discussions with our colleagues at Food Exeter and the Cornwall Food Foundation around reducing the carbon footprint of the food system. To this end we will be taking part in another Cool Food session at the University of Exeter’s Penryn campus on September 20th. At national level we are collaborating with colleagues from around the UK and Ireland on a Sustainable Food Cities Network response. We will keep you posted on this as it develops. In the meantime, we are delighted to bring you this opportunity to apply for an important role with Devon County Council … |
